Program to Develop Poverty Stricken Villages Penasihagama Village, Tabbowa

The objective of this program is to develop the overall situation of a selected village in a remote locality. Wherever possible, temple is used as the center for planning and implementing development activities. A ‘Dharmavijaya Samajaya’ is formed in which the post of President is held by the Chief Monk of the temple. With the leadership of the Chief Monk and with the participation of the people in the village an assessment of the prevailing situation is assessed. Based on this assessment, problems of people are identified and they are prioritized. Following that, projects are identified to tackle those problems and implemented with participation of the beneficiaries. Wherever, possible beneficiaries are encouraged to contribute their labor.

Development of Penasihagama Village, Tabbowa

Development of Penasihagama village in Tabbowa can be presented as a case for a successful effort to develop a village in a comprehensive manner. This village had 63 families. Activities carried out to improve the living condition of people are:

  • Temporary roofs of 50houses were replaced with permanent roofs;
  • Assisted to fix doors and windows in 13 houses;
  • Replaced temporary walls in 17 house with brick walls;
  • Replaced mud floors with cement floors in 17 houses;
  • Vocational training was provided to school leavers;
  • A Dhamma teaching school was established and teachers were appointed.
  • Books and dresses suitable to wear to Dhamma school were provided to 35 students;
  • Building to conduct English classes was constructed and a teacher was appointed;
  • Toilet facilities were provided to 16 families;
  • A tube well was constructed to solve the drinking water problem;
  • One thousand orange and pomegranate plants were distributed among the villagers to improve their income in the long run;
  • For ladies who had competency in sewing, machines and funds to purchase materials were provided;
  • In order to promote agriculture, machinery, equipment and other essential items were provided;
  • Constructed accommodation facilities to monks and a hall for Dhamma preaching in the temple.

The total cost for these development activities amounted to about seven million rupees.
